Mechanical Industry Associations Jointly Host '2019 Machinery Day' Event
LG Electronics' AI system air conditioner and KAIST startup Eznis Endosurgical's flexible endoscopic surgical robot were selected as part of this year's Top 10 Mechanical Technologies.
Technologies that represent successful domestic production, which previously had high reliance on overseas sources, were also named in the Top 10, including the manufacturing technology for the main control valve for medium-sized excavators (Doosan Infracore) and the gas turbine blade manufacturing technology (Jin Young TBX).
The Korea Association of Machinery Industry (KOAMI), the Korean Federation of Mechanical Engineering Societies, the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), and the Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) jointly selected the 'Top 10 Mechanical Technologies of the Year' and the 'Mechanical Engineers of the Year' to mark Machinery Day on the 6th.
Additionally, the '2019 Machinery Day' commemorative event was held at the EL Tower in Yangjae-dong, Seoul, at 10 AM, featuring awards for contributors to industry-academia-research cooperation in the machinery sector and a discussion forum on development strategies for the manufacturing equipment and parts industry.
The Top 10 Mechanical Technologies of the Year selected included:
Technology that improves tool lifespan by over 5 times using liquid nitrogen at $-196^\circ C$ (Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, KITECH)
Domestic manufacturing technology for gas turbine blades (Jin Young TBX)
Design and manufacturing technology for composite lattice structures made of high-strength carbon fiber (Hankuk Fiber)
System air conditioner securing optimal life cycle using Big Data-based AI technology (LG Electronics)
Flexible endoscopic surgical robot, K-FLEX (Eznis Endosurgical, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, KAIST)
AI-based condition prediction and diagnosis system (OnePredict)
Hydrogen-free carbon coating technology for improved low friction and wear resistance (Korea Institute of Materials Science)
Domestic development of main control valve for medium-sized excavators, DCV300 (Doosan Infracore)
Active steering bogie technology for urban rail vehicles to reduce wear, dust, and noise (Korea Railroad Research Institute, KRRI)
World's first ocean-going 114K crude oil tanker applying LNG propulsion technology (Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries)
Four individuals were honored as Mechanical Engineers of the Year, including Chairman Han Seung-il of AR, Professor Kim Yoon-young of Seoul National University, Principal Researcher Choi Heon-jong of KITECH, and Managing Director Choo Yong-ho of Deokil Industry.
Furthermore, nine individuals received the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Commendation, including Principal Researcher Baek Ju-hyun of LIG Nex1 (who developed aircraft actuation systems and unmanned systems) and Principal Researcher Lee Gang-seon of Heung A Kinemachinery (who succeeded in localizing and substituting imports of pharmaceutical packaging machinery).
'Machinery Day' is an event—celebrating its 18th anniversary this year—where industry, academia, and research institutions in the machinery sector gather to explore development strategies for the machinery industry and foster pride among mechanical industry professionals.
